A visit to the capital's Kazipara, Sheorapara, Taltala and Agargaon markets on Friday showed that the prices of winter vegetables have dropped significantly due to increased supply. Traders said that prices are falling every day due to the abundance of vegetables in the wholesale market.
Currently, beans are being sold at 30-60 taka per kg, tomatoes at 70-80 taka, carrots at 40 taka, cauliflower at 20-30 taka per piece and cabbage at 30-40 taka. Gourds are available at 30-50 taka.
New potatoes are being sold at 25-30 taka per kg and local onions at 120 taka, which is less than last week. The price of green chillies has also come down to 60-80 taka per kg.
Buyers say that while it was difficult to market for a small amount earlier, now they are buying bags of vegetables at a low cost. However, the prices in the fish and chicken markets have remained almost unchanged.
