T20 World Cup Withdrawal Could Cost BCB Crores in Financial Losses

ICC global tournaments are among the biggest sources of revenue for cricket boards and players alike. Had Bangladesh participated in the T20 World Cup, BCB, along with players, coaching staff, and team management, would have earned approximately BDT 40 million in participation fees—equivalent to around USD 300,000, according to officials familiar with the matter.

The earnings could have increased further depending on on-field performance. Teams finishing within the top 12 of the tournament stand to earn more than BDT 55 million (approximately USD 450,000). However, if Bangladesh officially withdraws, these financial opportunities will be completely lost.

The biggest impact is expected to fall on the players. National team cricketers will miss out on match fees, performance bonuses, and prize money. Each Bangladeshi player earns a minimum of BDT 250,000 per international T20 match. Losing multiple matches and potential bonuses could create a significant shortfall in their personal income.

BCB itself also faces substantial losses. The board was set to receive between USD 300,000 and USD 500,000 from ICC as participation fees—roughly BDT 40–60 million. Withdrawal from the tournament would mean forfeiting this entire amount.

Additionally, the absence of Bangladesh matches could affect broadcasting revenue and sponsorship deals. Bangladesh games traditionally attract strong viewership across the Indian subcontinent. Fewer matches may result in lower Television Rating Points (TRP), reducing advertiser and sponsor interest. Former cricketers and broadcasters believe this could also lower the tournament’s overall commercial value.

The financial context becomes even clearer when considering ICC’s recent prize money structure. The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup featured the highest prize pool in tournament history. The runners-up received USD 1.28 million, semifinalists earned USD 787,500 each, while teams failing to reach the second round still earned USD 382,500. Teams finishing between ninth and twelfth place received USD 247,500, and those ranked thirteenth to twentieth earned USD 225,000.

Moreover, excluding semifinals and finals, teams earned an additional USD 31,154 for every match victory. If Bangladesh’s withdrawal is finalized, these off-field financial implications will come sharply into focus alongside the sporting consequences.
