Kamrul Hasan Ripon, a leader of the Swechchhasebak League, was sent to jail on Tuesday in connection with a murder case linked to the July uprising. The order was issued by Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam.
Ripon, who serves as the president of Dhaka South Swechchhasebak League, was reportedly detained by local residents in the Bashundhara Residential Area around 2:30 am on Monday and was assaulted by a mob. He was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital in an injured condition.
Following the incident, police showed him arrested in a murder case related to the killing of Din Islam Bepari during the July movement in Jatrabari. He was produced before the court on Tuesday.
Investigating officer SI Russell Sardar of Jatrabari Police Station sought a seven-day remand for interrogation. However, the court ordered Ripon to be sent to jail and fixed Thursday for the remand hearing.
According to the case statement, on August 5, 2024—the day the government fell during the July uprising—students and members of the public brought out a procession toward Shahbagh. When the procession reached the intersection in front of Jatrabari Police Station around 1:30 pm, police along with activists of Awami League, Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League, and Jubo League allegedly launched a sudden armed attack.
Din Islam Bepari was shot multiple times during the attack and died on the spot. A murder case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station on February 20 this year in connection with the incident.
