Rural Electrification Board Launches Massive Campaign for ‘Yes’ Vote in Upcoming Referendum

The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (REB) has launched a comprehensive nationwide campaign to mobilize public support for the ‘Yes’ vote in the forthcoming referendum. The decision was finalized during a meeting held on Tuesday (January 20) at the Chief Adviser’s Office.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Professor Ali Riaz, Adviser for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, along with senior officials from the power sector.

As part of the campaign, REB plans to distribute leaflets titled “The Key to the Nation Is in Your Hands” to approximately 37.2 million rural electricity consumers across the country by February 7. During distribution, field workers will explain the rationale behind voting ‘Yes’ in the referendum.

Additional activities include regional meetings with 1.8 million prepaid meter users, public announcements through loudspeakers in remote rural areas, promotional content on Facebook pages of 80 Palli Bidyut Samities, and the display of drop-down banners at REB offices nationwide.

Addressing the meeting, Professor Ali Riaz stated that the people of Bangladesh have clearly expressed, through sacrifice and struggle, that they do not want a return to authoritarian rule. He emphasized that citizens desire a democratic, humane Bangladesh based on justice, and achieving this goal requires encouraging everyone to vote ‘Yes’.

The meeting was also attended by Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider, Power Division Secretary Farzana Mamataz, and REB Chairman Major General SM Zia-ul-Azim. Additionally, 417 General Managers and Deputy General Managers from REB’s field offices joined the meeting virtually via Zoom.
