A clash broke out between activists of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal over an eviction drive against illegal structures along the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in the Shimrail area of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Sunday, and police brought the situation under control by conducting a baton charge.
According to reports, around 500 illegal structures had been built on both sides of the highway. There have been allegations that some local political activists were collecting rent and extortion from these দোকানপাট, although shopkeepers were reluctant to reveal names due to fear.
The eviction drive was carried out jointly by the Narayanganj District Administration, the Roads and Highways Department, and the Highway Police under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Khandakar Shomit Raja.
During the operation, a group led by Jubo Dal leader Riazul Islam Rinaz gathered at the scene. At one point, associates of Abdul Kadir, former vice-president of Narayanganj city Chhatra Dal, allegedly attacked them. Jubo Dal activist Tamim was reportedly beaten during the clash.
On the other hand, Chhatra Dal leaders claimed that their activists had gone to assist the police during the eviction drive, but were attacked by the rival group.
As tension escalated at the scene, police carried out a baton charge to disperse both sides and restore order.
Sources said the clash was mainly triggered by disputes among multiple groups over controlling the cleared roadside space and collecting tolls. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will be taken if any illegal structures are built again on government land in the future.
