Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Immediate Ceasefire After Deadly Clashes

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following weeks of deadly border clashes. In a joint statement released on Saturday, defense ministers from both countries confirmed that all military activities along the border have been suspended, effective from midday local time.

The conflict claimed at least 41 lives and displaced nearly one million people. According to the statement, if the ceasefire holds for 72 consecutive hours, Thailand will release 18 Cambodian soldiers currently in custody.

The agreement includes strict de-escalation measures, such as halting attacks on civilians, civilian infrastructure, and military targets. Both sides have also committed to refraining from unprovoked firing, troop movements, or advancing toward each other’s positions.

It is worth noting that a previous ceasefire agreement brokered last October in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump collapsed earlier this month, leading to renewed fighting. Since then, both nations have accused each other of violating the truce.
