US Announces $11 Billion Arms Sale to Taiwan

The United States has announced a proposed arms sale worth nearly $11 billion to Taiwan, including advanced rocket launchers and missile systems. The package is expected to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities and is now awaiting approval from the US Congress.

This marks the second phase of arms sales to Taiwan since Donald Trump returned to the White House. The announcement comes amid growing military pressure from China, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province.

In recent months, China has intensified military drills and conducted frequent incursions into Taiwan’s air and maritime zones, escalating tensions in the region. The latest US decision is likely to further strain relations between Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense welcomed the announcement on Thursday, thanking the United States and stating that the deal would help the island rapidly build stronger deterrence capabilities.

Although the United States maintains formal diplomatic relations with Beijing rather than Taipei, it remains Taiwan’s strongest ally and its largest arms supplier. Washington has long sought to maintain a delicate balance between supporting Taiwan’s defense and managing relations with China.

China has not yet issued an official response to the latest announcement. However, it has previously warned that US arms sales to Taiwan seriously violate China’s sovereignty and security interests.

If approved, the deal would surpass many previous arms packages and could further heighten tensions between the US and China over the Taiwan issue.
