Donald Trump has once again drawn global attention with his strong remarks on Greenland, saying the United States “needs” the territory to prevent Russia and China from expanding their influence in the Arctic region. According to Trump, Greenland’s vast mineral resources and strategic location make it critical to U.S. national security.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Greenland must come under U.S. ownership either through negotiation or by tougher means if necessary. He argued that leasing or long-term agreements are insufficient, claiming that only ownership guarantees proper security and protection.
Trump’s comments have sparked sharp backlash. All political parties in Greenland issued a joint statement asserting that the future of Greenland can only be decided by its own people—not by the United States or Denmark. Danish officials also expressed serious concern, warning that any military action would signal the collapse of the NATO alliance.
Denmark’s parliamentary defense committee chair Rasmus Jarlov said that a U.S. attack on Greenland would be unacceptable and could lead to a disastrous conflict between NATO allies. While acknowledging Denmark’s limited military capacity, he stressed that such aggression would be reckless and unnecessary.
The United States already operates a military base in Greenland, with American troops stationed there since World War II. Existing defense agreements allow U.S. military presence and access to resources, including mining. However, Denmark and Greenland insist that the territory is not for sale.
Trump first proposed purchasing Greenland in 2019 during his first term, a suggestion that was firmly rejected. After returning to office following the 2024 election, he renewed the proposal, once again facing strong opposition from both Greenland and Denmark.
Despite rising Arctic activity by Russia and China, neither country has formally claimed Greenland. Nevertheless, Trump continues to argue—without presenting evidence—that foreign military vessels are operating near the island, reinforcing his call for U.S. control.
