The Unyielding Leader Laid to Rest: Khaleda Zia Buried with State Honours

The burial of Begum Khaleda Zia marked the end of an era in Bangladesh’s political history. On Wednesday afternoon, she was laid to rest with full state honours at Zia Udyan in Dhaka. Members of the armed forces presented a guard of honour following her burial, attended by her son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, and other family members.

Earlier, her funeral prayers were held at Manik Mia Avenue, where millions of mourners gathered from across the country. The massive crowd extended beyond the avenue to Bijoy Sarani, Agargaon and Karwan Bazar.

Dignitaries including Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, members of the advisory council, political leaders, foreign diplomats, Islamic scholars and people from all walks of life attended the janaza.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday (30 December) while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after prolonged illness. Widely known as the “Mother of Democracy,” her death leaves behind a profound political and emotional void in the nation.
