Political tension escalated in Brahmanbaria-2 constituency after independent candidate Barrister Rumin Farhana made a controversial remark during an election campaign. While addressing locals in Shahbazpur area of Sarail upazila on Thursday afternoon, she indirectly referred to a rival candidate as ‘Rohingya’.
Rumin Farhana, who recently contested the seat as an independent following her expulsion from the BNP, claimed that during the Awami League era, MPs from neighboring constituencies exercised influence in Sarail and Ashuganj. She further alleged that a coalition-backed candidate, whom she described as an outsider, is now campaigning in the area alongside a former MP.
Local political observers believe the comment was aimed at Junayed Al Habib, the Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh leader nominated by the BNP-led alliance. His permanent address is reportedly in Brahmanbaria Sadar, though he has recently been active in political programs outside the constituency.
The remark has drawn mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a campaign tactic, while others criticize the language used in political discourse.
