The physical condition of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has deteriorated further. Doctors treating her at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka have described her current condition as extremely critical. She is being treated in the hospital’s Coronary Care Unit (CCU), where she has been placed on life support and is undergoing regular dialysis.
On Monday night (December 29), a member of the medical board, Dr. Ziaul Haque, told reporters that Khaleda Zia’s condition remains highly alarming. “Her condition worsens significantly whenever dialysis is stopped. For this reason, regular dialysis is essential, and she is currently on life support,” he said.
Another member of the medical board, Dr. Zafar Iqbal, described her condition as “critically ill.” He stated, “We are doing everything possible. After conducting further tests, decisions regarding the next course of treatment will be taken. She remains under intensive care in the CCU.”
A senior physician involved in her treatment, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Khaleda Zia’s advanced age and long-standing multiple health complications have made her treatment extremely challenging. “She has been suffering from several chronic illnesses for years. Some of these conditions could not be fully treated in the past, and now multiple complications have become active at the same time,” the doctor explained.
Doctors also noted that her condition has been fluctuating, with occasional slight improvements followed by sudden deterioration. She is under round-the-clock intensive monitoring, and various medical tests are being conducted daily to assess her condition.
Meanwhile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who recently returned to the country from London, has been visiting his mother regularly at Evercare Hospital. After completing his political engagements, he has been spending long hours by her bedside. On Monday, after spending nearly three hours at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan, he went directly to the hospital.
Later, addressing party leaders and activists outside the BNP office, Tarique Rahman urged the nation to pray for his mother’s speedy recovery.
Begum Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment in the CCU of Evercare Hospital for more than a month. Her medical care is being overseen by renowned cardiologist Professor Shahabuddin Talukder.
Following a medical board meeting on Saturday night, Khaleda Zia’s personal physician, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, said, “Her condition is extremely complex and critical. Only with the mercy of Almighty Allah and the relentless efforts of the doctors can she overcome this crisis and show some positive progress.”
For a long time, Khaleda Zia has been suffering from multiple chronic ailments, including arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, liver complications, lung problems, heart disease, and eye-related issues. While staying at her residence, she recently developed severe shortness of breath, cough, fever, and extreme physical weakness, prompting her admission to Evercare Hospital on November 23.
Subsequent medical examinations revealed rapid deterioration in her lung, heart, and kidney functions, leading to her transfer to the CCU on November 27.
A medical board comprising around 30 local and foreign specialist doctors has been formed to oversee her treatment. The board meets daily to review her latest condition and adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
