Volunteer Party Leader Azizur Rahman Shot Dead in Tejgaon, Police Probe Motives

The murder of Volunteer Party leader Azizur Rahman alias Mosabbir (44) has triggered an extensive investigation by law enforcement agencies, who are examining multiple possible motives behind the crime. Azizur was shot dead by assailants on Wednesday night in the West Tejturi Bazar area under Tejgaon Police Station in Dhaka.

Azizur Rahman served as the former General Secretary of Dhaka North unit of the Volunteer Party. During the previous Awami League government, he faced several cases and spent a significant period in jail. After the fall of the government on August 5, 2024, he became active again in party politics.

According to police and RAB sources, Azizur had ongoing conflicts with a group over control of Karwan Bazar, Tejturi Bazar, and surrounding areas, including alleged extortion activities. His intention to contest the upcoming Ward No. 26 councillor election also reportedly led to disputes with another local group. Investigators have also found information suggesting rivalry with a top criminal figure over the ward election.

Additionally, Azizur’s decision to work in favor of a BNP-led alliance candidate in the Dhaka-12 constituency allegedly created tensions with a faction deprived of party nomination.

Police sources say two auto-rickshaw drivers were present near the scene at the time of the shooting. According to their statements, after being shot, Azizur shouted, “Why did you do this to me?”—leading investigators to believe that the attackers were familiar to him.

CCTV footage has captured two suspects directly involved in the incident. One suspect’s face is clearly visible, while the other had covered his face. Police are attempting to identify and arrest those involved.

Azizur’s wife, Suraiya Akhtar, filed a murder case against four to five unidentified individuals at Tejgaon Police Station, claiming the killing was premeditated. Meanwhile, Volunteer Party leaders have announced nationwide protests demanding the immediate arrest of the killers.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned the killing, stating that such brutal incidents are part of a deliberate attempt to destabilize the country and put the government in a difficult position.
