Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, the voice of the July revolutionary and anti-hegemonic movement, was buried next to the tomb of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam adjacent to Dhaka University at around 3:15 pm on Saturday (December 20).
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, Associate Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed, Daily Amar Desh Editor Mahmudur Rahman, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Sarjis Alam, Hasnat Abdullah, DUCSU VP Sadiq Kayem and leaders of various political, social and student organizations were present at the burial ceremony.
Tight security measures were taken around the Nazrul Tomb Complex and Dhaka University area for the burial. Barricades were placed in front of the TSC, Central Mosque and Tomb gates and some gates were temporarily closed.
Earlier, Hadi's funeral was held at 2:30 pm at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building. The funeral was attended by Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman, top leaders of BNP and Jamaat, and representatives of various political parties. The crowd attending the funeral filled the Parliament building area to the brim.
Hadi's brother Abu Bakr Siddique gave an emotional reminiscence in his speech before the funeral. At that time, the entire atmosphere became heavy with tears and grief.
Osman Hadi, a frontline fighter of the July 24th mass uprising, later became known as a vocal voice against Indian hegemony and fascism by establishing the 'Inqilab Manch'. His speech was widely discussed on various television talk shows and social media.
Hadi was seriously injured in a gunfight by terrorists while campaigning in Bijoynagar in the capital on December 12. He was taken to Singapore for better treatment, but ultimately lost his battle with death.
A state mourning is being observed today on his death. The national flag has been flown at half-mast at all government and private buildings in the country and at Bangladesh missions abroad.
